HPA Composts 42,849 Pounds of Food Waste in 2011
Thanks to a partnership with A1 Organics, an organic recycling business, High Point Academy students diverted 42,849 pounds of organic waste in 2011. By placing food scraps and other compostable waste in a separate bin at lunchtime, students have significantly reduced the amount of HPA trash that ends up in landfills.
On average, A1 Organics picks up 3,895 pounds of compostable waste from the school each month. Back at their headquarters, the waste is converted into rich organic compost, which is then returned to the land for garden or landscaping projects, including HPA’s school garden.
Indoor Climbing Wall to be Installed in HPA Gym
Thanks to High Point Academy’s Parent-Teacher Organization, the school will soon install an indoor climbing wall in its gymnasium. The traverse wall will be 20 feet wide and 10 feet tall, and will come with 125 hand holds and a premium three-inch cordless mat locking system. Students will climb the wall horizontally, not vertically, which will eliminate the need for ropes or harnesses.
Mr. Brandon Faulkenburg, one of HPA’s P.E. teachers, and an avid climber himself, believes that the wall will provide students with a fun and unique way to work on physical skills like strength, balance, and coordination, interpersonal skills like communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution, and cognitive skills like planning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
“Our hope by bringing in a climbing wall is to get students active in different ways and get them motivated not only at school but at home. We want to get students outside and off the couch to enjoy our beautiful state of Colorado,” said Mr. Faulkenburg.
